Dragon Ball Z (abbreviated DBZ) is a Japanese anime series based on the manga Dragon Ball (volume 17-42 of the original Japanese edition — volume 33-85 of the 1st Dutch edition) by Akira Toriyama and produced by Toei Animation. The series is a sequel to the television series Dragon Ball.
